On This Day - September 23, 1980.

The final Boeing 727-276A ordered new by Trans-Australia Airlines in December 1970, arrived at Melbourne (Tullamarine), having completed its delivery flight from the United States (Seattle). This aircraft, VH-TBR 'Bert Hinkler' was routed via Christchurch as a 'flag-waving' exercise to promote the airline's recently announced direct jet services from Hobart to Christchurch.

The Qantas Airways Boeing 747-438 VH-OJH 'City of Darwin' was badly damaged when it hydroplaned off the end of the runway whilst landing at Bangkok (Thailand). Minor injuries were sustained by 28 passengers.

The Virgin Australia Regional Airlines Airbus A320-232 VH-YUD 'Port Beach' entered service, operating Flight VOZ2601 from Perth to RAAF Curtin.
